To order, refer to either the For Sale page for a specific one selected by the photo, or you can place an order for any color by email. If you are new to owning ferrets, we suggest that you let staff select for you by temperament, rather than color. After you have one color, then you may be more inclined to pick a certain color that you do not already have. Some ferrets are more appropriate for families with children than others. Ferrets are not to be considered to be a child's pet, with the child being solely or primarily responsible for its care. A ferret is a wonderful family pet.
What about the spay or neuter?
Ferrets need to be spayed or neutered in order to be good household pets. Females develop an anemia if they are not bred, and males smell really awful if left unneutered. They have a smelly and oily musk in their fur which the neuter mostly eliminates. The fur will stay nice because the male is not into his breeding cycle. Sixteen hours of light daily, which seems to occur in most homes, will keep the male in perpetual heat, and he will look, smell, and feel miserable. For this reason, we neuter the males. However, we are not a pet store and have the option of what age we wish to do the surgery. Some customers want a kit that is 6 -8 weeks old and already neutered and descented. Some want to delay the neuter until the ferret is a bit older, or even months older. We have ferrets that are not neutered, to be neutered when sold, so the ages can vary and the customer can choose what they feel is the most appropriate selection for their family. We do not send out intact ferrets, and a "spay and neuter contract" is a worthless agreement that can result in ferrets being sent to shelters when the owners find out the consequences.
What about the descenting?
Ferrets have anal sacs that release a chemical similar to the one released by skunks. The sacs are on either side of the rectum and can be surgically removed or left intact. In America, they are usually removed. In Europe, they are most often not removed. The practice probably began when ferrets became popular for pet stores to receive in quantity, and ferrets playing can release the odor. It may have also been a practice related to shipping them on passenger airlines where the air is circulating between the cabin and the cargo, with the airline finding them less objectionable if the glands were removed. Ferrets are sold differently in many countries, and not mass produced for commercial purposes, and shipped in quantity as they often are in America. That could account for the difference in attitudes towards the descenting between most Americans and Europeans. We Americans are just used to having everything "ready to use" and "processed" before the purchase. The important factor is the age of the ferret at the time of the descenting. If you opt to have your ferret neutered after the age of 12 weeks, I would suggest having the glands left intact because they are larger and more developed, and the surgery could have complications that we usually do not see in the younger ferrets. You as the buyer can inquire about what type of ferret you want and the surgery that your would like it to have, and at what age. We can then look at our available kits and help you decide which one is best according to its current age.
Do you sell ferrets that are already spayed or neutered, and descented?
Yes, we usually have some in stock so that people can come by with their families and select one or two, and take them home that same day. Most ferrets are not spayed or neutered until they are sold,so that they can continue to grow and develop without the surgery. Males with a later neuter tend to get larger and more muscular if the neuter is delayed. However, there are advantages to getting a ferret while it is still 6-8 weeks old and letting it grow up as a family member. We respect the customer's choices, although we will not do the surgery on a kit that we feel is too young. If you plan to come by to pick out a ferret, call or email ahead to see how many are ready to go to homes on that day, and what colors. Ordering online gives us the opportunity to have your ferret's surgery done as per your wishes before you pick it up.
